Leather is classic, sexy, stylish – and best of all, this season’s hottest look. If you want give a nod to the trend without looking like a Hell’s Angel, then here’s how to work it.

Get the colour right: When it comes to leather, colourful is the new black. In 2009 the catwalk featured leather in ever colour under the sun, but this season the trend is going monochrome.. Opt for dark greys, muted burgundies, and earthy tones like brown, tan and rust.

Be adventurous: Leather jackets are the easiest way to wear this fashion – but why stop there? Leather leggings, skirts and even lingerie are hotter than ever, and if the idea of going all-out dominatrix deters you then the odd piece of leather decoration is a chic yet subtle way to interpret the look.

Leather for every occasion: Leather isn’t just great for ultra-chic club nights. You can take it casual, with a leather jacket, skinny jeans and heels, or opt for a sexy yet formal look with leather trousers and a designer shirt for the office. This trend is nothing if not flexible. 

Accessorise: You don’t have to be a rock chick or a secret fetishist to embrace the craze for leather. Stick to funky leather accessories from the high street to stay on the cutting edge of fashion. New Look does some great shoes as well as purses and bags, all at prices perfect for budgeters.

Get the look without the cruelty: If the idea of wearing treated animal skin makes your blood run cold, then don’t. You can still work the leather trend without the cruelty, by opting for faux-leather as inspired by animal rights promoter Stella McCartney. It looks just as good as the real thing, costs less, and doesn’t stick to your skin when you get hot.  

Don’t go overboard: the number on rule when it comes to the leather trend is moderation. Leather pieces are great as part of an outfit, but if you sling jacket, trousers, heels and accessories all together then you risk a fashion faux pas.
